Real projects where Unchained helps teams assess risk, engage suppliers and embed ESG to create measurable change across their supply chains.
This emerging green technology provider is at the forefront of installing wind turbines to meet the demands of the emerging green energy market in Australia. Having originally received a process map and outline (from a large consulting firm) for a risk management framework to monitor and report on human rights risks with suppliers during the tender process, the company commissioned Unchained develop the framework collateral in order to secure the right level of expertise.
Over a 4-month period, Unchained worked with the company’s ESG lead to develop all the necessary documents for the risk management framework, including policies, protocols, controls, position statements, implementation guidance and analysis dashboard. This portfolio would enable the client to manage suppliers internally and conduct inherent and residual risk assessments and social compliance audit during the tender and maintenance phases of projects.
The client found the portfolio of documents both comprehensive yet simple to follow. In particular, they saw ways to improve their overall risk appetite statement to integrate other ESG dimensions based on the statement developed by Unchained. They were also able to integrate the framework documents into their existing risk management strategy. Unchained has remained their preferred supplier for future advisory and support on human rights and other ESG dimensions.
Having completed their first Modern Slavery Statement in March 31, 2021, the company lacked the internal know-how and capacity to implement the commitments made for the second reporting period. Having completed a high-level assessment of their top suppliers by spend, the company knew they needed a more comprehensive risk assessment and supplier engagement strategy to mitigate the risk of modern slavery.
Unchained worked with the procurement manager to deliver an initial Risk Assessment report of the company’s tier 1 suppliers in Australia. It identified 200 suppliers with medium-to-high risk categories at the tier 2 level, and developed a Supplier Engagement Strategy which included the development of a SAQ and further desk research to investigate coal suppliers, the ports used and the international shipping companies who transport their products.
Though not entirely comfortable with the results of the risk assessment, the company came to realise that they needed to develop a strategy to mitigate these risks and remediate where possible, taking into account their market position and how much leverage they could apply to suppliers. Through Unchained’s advice, they discerned avenues for collaboration with buyers and suppliers.
This apparel and merchandise manufacturer had a great desire to improve their strategy to align with ESG and CSR reporting mechanisms. Having completed Unchained’s ESG Strategy Course, they grew in their understanding of environmental and social issues but realised that they lacked the capacity to integrate all their processes into one overarching strategic framework.
Unchained worked with the executive team to develop their ESG Strategy, starting with a gaps analysis of their existing policies, procedures and risk management data on carbon emissions, human right, cybersecurity and other governance controls. Unchained then designed the strategy and worked with the client to augment their policy portfolio and program of improvement.
With the right ESG and CSR governance and risk management framework in place, the company was able to consider options to change their business structure as a social enterprise. With Unchained’s additional help, they applied for certification with Social Traders. The overall strategy then enabled them to strengthen their brand position and communications strategy.
